An issue came up on a newly provisioned Windows server running SQL. It was provisioned with multiple partitions (drives), however when you access the server using a domain user account that is not a member of the Domain admin group, some of the drives are not accessible.
As you can see the system drive looks fine, however right off the bat the two remaining drives look different. Note that the total space available and free space available information is missing for both. In addition, when you double click on any of these drives you get an error message saying drive is not accessible “Access is denied.”
To cut a long story short, after looking into everything else possible we determined issue is caused by the UAC (User Account Control) settings.
Navigate to the Control Panel, then User Accounts and click on Change User Account Control settings. Lower the slider to Never notify, then press the OK button.
You’ll need to restart the server in order for the changes to take effect.
